MathAmigos worked with the Santa Fe Public Library to create Mathemagical Times, a unique summer math and literacy program in which 80 students between the ages of 4 – 14 participated by listening to math-themed books read aloud and playing math games and other activities. Earlier this month we conducted our first online teacher workshop for 35 teachers from the Airport corridor schools, and created a Teachers’ Resource Library at each of the schools with math-related storybooks, games and tools for teachers to use with their students – whether teaching online or in the classroom.
The Reading Group is most proud of the OMG First Book grant and the successful distribution of approximately 4,000 books to 75 teachers impacting 4,000 children. Amy Miller, then co-chair of The Reading Group, in collaboration with the New Mexico Public Education Department Literacy and Dyslexia Working Group, developed a Dyslexia Handbook and Structured Literacy and Dyslexia 101 course reaching 17,000 teachers. The new normal required us to work more closely with parents and caregivers who are now more than ever their children’s language arts teaching and learning partners. To this end we will be developing videos on reading to children at different reading and development levels and providing virtual support sessions with families.
At YouthWorks, we are most proud of this organization for being able to pivot and adapt during the pandemic. We have been able to shift a lot of our programs online; we have adjusted our culinary programs to prepare, package and distribute thousands of meals throughout Santa Fe and Northern New Mexico; we have been able to convert barren land for food production with our YCC crew; and we have been distributing emergency flex funds to the people most in need. YouthWorks is a team effort, and these things can only happen because of the dedicated and outstanding staff within the organization.
STEM Scaffold Santa Fe (S3), during Summer 2020, worked with Northern New Mexico College engineering students to enhance and document existing STEAM projects and develop a new STEAM project. College senior Esther Lescht redesigned our Sun Tracker and Smart Green House projects and built a prototype of the one-way bridge project. We will be deploying the one-way bridge project at Capital High School in 2021, with materials delivered to the students and virtual mentoring during class time. Additionally, college senior Edwin Felter embarked on a new project that we hope will appeal to Native American students. Edwin is a member of the Nambe pueblo and regular performer (voice and drum) of Native music. He built the prototype for a project called Hand-Heart-Drum. We hope to roll out the Hand-Heart-Drum project at the Santa Fe Indian School in spring or summer of 2021.
From March through May, the Santa Fe Community Educators Network (SFCEN) distributed 20,000 activity packets to Santa Fe youth, and during the summer we partnered with the City to create and distribute 500 – 800 activity packets per week. Throughout the year, SFCEN has provided professional development opportunities so members can better meet the challenges of virtual and distance learning and through regular meetings we have provided a support system for each other. As the pandemic continues, we will continue to work with SFPS, NEA-SF, Partners in Education and other community groups to provide activity kits, school supplies, and virtual experiences for youth
