By: Jenifer Nevarez, NM TechWorks and JC Ramirez, AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associate
The TechHire Santa Fe Collaborative Working Group and their coordinator Jennifer Nevarez are honored to work with three outstanding VISTA Summer Associates this year. JC Ramirez, Elizabeth Guthrie, and Alexis Rodriguez have been learning about Tech entrepreneurism at the Santa Fe Business Incubator and computer coding by working with Eric Streeper, the founder of Tech start-up Xerb-TV. The Summer Associates have also participated in the Regional Tech Exchange with Tech industry leaders from Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Los Alamos, and Espanola and met with Mayor Alan Webber in person. The Summer Associates co-taught a website-making workshop for Creative Santa Fe as part of the NM TechWorks “1,000 websites in 1,000 days” initiative and helped community members of all ages to build and launch a basic website in three hours. The Summer Associates have also met with filmmaker Doug Crawford of Santa Fe FilmWorks for an introduction to digital videography and are working with visiting national and international college interns from St. Edwards College in Austin and Villanova University in Philadelphia, as well as Ireland. Summer Associates will also assist in teaching APP-making for youth age 12 to 17 next week at Santa Fe Community College.
From the perspective of JC Ramierez:
My first two weeks working as a Summer VISTA Associate has been exactly what I signed up for. Jennifer Case Nevarez had explained to me that this program was not going to be like any other Summer program that I’ve seen before. Jennifer warned me that as a VISTA we would be running around all of Santa Fe meeting very talented people. That aspect of the program that interested me was the chance to get to work with experts in various fields of technology. Meeting business owners and entrepreneurs has been an interesting experience because I would like to keep pursuing a path in entrepreneurship.
Within the span of the first two weeks, our VISTA group in Tech Hire has gotten to meet the Mayor of Santa Fe. We got to hear his plan for the future of technology and plans to incentivize entrepreneurs to move to Santa Fe. That experience was motivational because it was an assuring moment for me for following a tech oriented career.
